Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the stimulation of specific points on the body to manipulate the nervous system and promote movement throughout the body. Effective in relieving physical ailments and emotional problems, this form of integrative medicine is safe and virtually painless. Acupuncture is a form of traditional Eastern healing that has been practiced for thousands of years.
What can Acupuncture help relieve?
Acupuncture may be helpful in relieving side effects of cancer treatment, including:

In addition to helping relieve specific conditions, acupuncture also promotes overall physical and emotional well being. It can be used to assist with lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation, stress reduction and weight loss. Acupuncture is known for being a deeply relaxing treatment.
Results from Systemic Reviews and Randomized Control Trials show Acupuncture can reduce musculoskeletal pain, general cancer pain, CIPN (chemotherapy induced neuropathy), and CINV (chemotherapy induced nausea/vomiting), as well as fatigue, anxiety and insomnia. Research indicates that standard of care along with acupuncture has a greater reduction in hot flashes. This includes men undergoing androgen deprivation treatments. The SIO (Society of Integrative Oncology) guidelines endorsed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology specifically recommend Acupuncture for Aromatase inhibitor related joint pain in patients that have or had gone through breast cancer treatment, also for musculoskeletal pain, other cancer related pain, and CIPN. Make sure you are seeing a provider that has specialized education in treating this population. Do the needles hurt?
When the needles are inserted, you may feel a tapping or pinching sensation, or you may feel nothing at all. Acupuncture utilizes ultra-thin needles that are often thinner than a human hair. Unlike needles used to draw blood or administer injections, acupuncture needles are generally painless.
What can you expect during your first visit?
Upon a patient’s initial visit, the acupuncture practitioner will assess medical history and patient goals to develop a customized treatment plan. Acupuncture treatments are intended to build on each other, meaning a treatment course will often involve appointments occurring weekly or bi-weekly for a period of time. The first course of needles will be administered during the initial visit.
What is the cost?
The Medi-Spa at Mercy offers acupuncture on Wednesdays between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The cost is $150 for the initial consultation and $110 follow up.
Integrative care and complimentary therapies are slowly beginning to be covered by insurance companies. Depending on your insurance provider and individual plan, you may qualify for partial or even full reimbursement for your acupuncture treatment.
The Medi-Spa at Mercy operates as a fee for service entity, requiring self pay up front. However, Medi-Spa staff members are able to generate billing notes including codes necessary to process insurance reimbursements. This means that you will pay at the time of service and may be reimbursed directly after submission of billing note and receipt if your insurance company provides coverage.
Unfortunately not all insurance companies are providing reimbursement for acupuncture. In order to find out whether you qualify for reimbursement, call your insurance company directly and inquire about integrative care covered within your specific plan.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD Massage)
MLD massage employs very light touch in a specialized way, helping to decongest the tissue of stagnant fluid and waste products, enhancing lymphatic flow, boosting your immunity, aiding in pain reduction and fluid retention. It has a functional purpose to help get the lymphatic system moving again and it is much appreciated by cancer survivors during their recovery, as well as by those who had their lymph nodes removed and wish to help prevent lymphedema. It is uniquely calming to the nervous system, provides waves of relaxation and enhances well-being.

Oncology Massage
Oncology massage is a specialized, supportive therapy provided by a trained massage therapist with an understanding of the unique needs and safety considerations of patients with cancer. Massage techniques are modified according to the patient’s diagnosis, cancer treatment, medications, symptoms, physical condition, and individual goals. Sessions use gentle, clinically appropriate techniques to promote relaxation, comfort, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Massage may also provide supportive care for treatment-related muscle tension, discomfort, fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty relaxing or sleeping.

Myofascial Release
Myofascial release targets the fascia, the connective tissue, surrounding muscles, bones, and organs. Applying gentle sustained pressure to an area, it releases pain, restores natural movement and improves posture.

Prenatal Massage
Helps support the expectant mother in reducing tension from lower back, improving circulation, reducing fluid retention and minimizing fatigue.

Therapeutic Foot Treatment
Therapeutic technique that applies gentle to firm pressure to specific points on the feet (reflex points) that correspond to different organs and systems in the body. This treatment promotes deep relaxation, enhances circulation and nerve function, and supports natural balance.

Basic relaxation massage characterized by long gliding strokes, kneading and friction techniques working on the more superficial layers of muscles. This technique stimulates blood flow and decreases toxins within the muscles. A Swedish approach is recommended for first-time massage recipients as well as anyone with the primary goal of relaxation and rejuvenation in mind.

Slower deeper pressure needed to release knots and tender areas in the muscle, relieving tension and stiffness client.

Hot Stone Massage
Involves the application of water-heated basalt stones of varying sizes to key points on the body and the use of those stones in the massage strokes and creating sensations of comfort and warmth. The direct heat relaxes muscles, allowing manipulation of greater intensity than regular massage.
