About Post-Menopausal Bleeding

Post-menopausal bleeding is when a woman experiences vaginal bleeding after completing menopause (that is, going for 12 months without menstruating). There are a number of reasons why post-menopausal bleeding might occur, but it is not normal, even if it's light or infrequent.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

Post-menopausal bleeding may come out as light spotting, a heavy flow or somewhere in between. The discharge can look red, pink or brown.

In some cases, post-menopausal bleeding may be accompanied by:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

To determine the cause of post-menopausal bleeding, doctors may perform a pelvic exam, a pelvic ultrasound, an endometrial biopsy or a diagnostic hysteroscopy.

Treatment Options for Post-Menopausal Bleeding

Treatment options for post-menopausal bleeding depend on the cause. Some patients will only need medication, while others may need surgery if benign growths are causing the bleeding. In rare cases where cancer is the cause, treatment may include surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy.

The Institute for Gynecologic Care at Mercy offers physician and surgical expertise in benign or non-cancerous conditions of the female genital tract as well as in malignant or cancerous conditions such as uterine, ovarian and cervical cancer.
