Hand or Finger Nerve Injuries Treated at Mercy
Orthopedic surgeons of The Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore provide expertise and advanced surgical skills for hand and finger conditions, including nerve injuries.
Nerves provide communication between the brain and different parts of the body. When a nerve is injured, it cannot communicate about such things as movement, feeling, temperature or pain. The hand has three main nerves:
- Radial nerve
- Median nerve
- Ulnar nerve
These nerves in the hand can be injured or damaged from:
- Stretching or pressure
- Cuts
- Falls, crushing accidents or other trauma
- Burns or extreme cold temperatures
- Electrical shock
- Radiation
Symptoms of hand and finger nerve injuries include:
- Loss of movement
- Lack of feeling
An orthopedic specialist will take a medical history and perform a physical exam to diagnose nerve injuries. Nerve conduction studies and an electromyography (EMG) test may be performed to aid in the diagnosis of nerve injuries.
