Maria C.E. Jacobs, M.D., Director of Radiation Oncology at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD, has been recognized as a "Power Woman" for 2022 by the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW).

BLSYW is an all-girls, college-preparatory public charter school serving young women residing in Baltimore since 2009.

Dr. Jacobs was honored at the school's ninth annual (Em)Power Breakfast held in-person and virtually on Thursday, October 27, 2022. The breakfast serves to honor community members who exemplify the school's core values of professionalism, resilience, integrity, disciple, and enthusiasm. Proceeds from the event support the school's cornerstone academic and social-emotional learning curriculum.

Dr. Maria Jacobs works in close collaboration with the cancer surgeons in The Breast Center at Mercy to coordinate post-surgical treatment for breast cancer patients. Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT) is a state-of-the-art technology that allows patients to get treated in one single radiation therapy session.

Dr. Jacobs, and her colleague, Dr. Neil B. Friedman, Medical Director at The Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy, were the first team of doctors in the state of Maryland to use IORT.

"The Mercy spirit surrounds you when you're anywhere near Dr. Jacobs. She's a terrific clinician and a caring individual who shares her vast depth of knowledge with patients and their families in the most engaging way. We are so very proud of Dr. Jacobs in receiving this honor which is so well deserved," said Dr. David N. Maine, President and CEO, Mercy Health Services, Mercy Medical Center.

The 2021 virtual (Em)Power Breakfast engaged more than 700 supporters and raised over $500,000 to support the school's cornerstone academic and social-emotional learning curriculum. This year, the school is working to raise $525,000 to support the school's signature programs.

Through academics and social-emotional learning, BLSYW students are taught to develop a strong sense of self, sisterhood, compassion, and good decision-making. The school is an affiliate of the Young Women's Leadership Network.
