Jeffrey Landsman, M.D., is a primary care provider at Mercy Personal Physicians at Lutherville. Board Certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics, Dr. Landsman diagnoses and treats a variety of common and complex acute and chronic conditions. He recently addressed questions from PARADE magazine regarding “Why Am I Losing Weight Without Trying?”

What are possible reasons someone could be losing weight without trying?

  1. Underlying undiagnosed medical condition (Examples: thyroid issues, uncontrolled diabetes, GI issues and cancer are problems that could lead to unintentional weight loss).
-Get evaluated by your primary care provider for appropriate physical exam and laboratory testing to further evaluate your condition.

  2. Eating healthier, but not specifically dieting. Increased fiber, fruits and vegetables in diet. Decreased processed food.
-Nothing needed for this except for being aware of recent changes.

  3. Side effect of a new medication. Many prescription medications may have a side effect of losing weight.
-Review with your doctor to see if any of your medications can be causing unintentional weight loss.
