Gestational diabetes, which is diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy, is on the rise.

According to Robert O. Atlas, M.D., Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mercy Medical Center, increasing obesity rates are the major cause. Also, certain women are at marked increased risk for the condition.

"Asian Indians, American Indians, Latinx groups of individuals are at increased risk of gestational diabetes, and diabetes, in and of itself," Dr. Atlas said.

Food intake has something to do with it, especially bread and rice-based diets, which are high in carbohydrates, which can lead to weight gain.

Dr. Atlas says it's important for all pregnant women to try to maintain an optimal weight during pregnancy and he stresses exercise is critical for blood sugar control.

Dr. Atlas is a key leader within The Family Childbirth and Children’s Center, regularly providing strategic direction and recommendations for enhancements to the patient experience.
