Managing Concussions in Children
June 22, 2021
A concussion is a bump or blow to the head that causes interior damage.
According to board pediatrician Dr. Ashanti Woods with Mercy Family Care Physicians, the injury is usually temporary, but it is key to make sure your child does not return to play too early.
"We have to judge each child independently. That makes sense. We want kids to return to light activity, such as brisk walking or perhaps a job a couple days after their concussion. That's only if it is a mild concussion or mild traumatic brain injury," Woods said.
If a child has concussion symptoms like headache, dizziness or fatigue, Dr. Woods said it's probably best to put the child on a no-activity schedule.
