Dr. Jonathan Rich, D.O., of Mercy Medical Center, says there's a simple way to know if you're hydrated enough.

"The key is to look at your urine. That will probably tell you your answer. If it's a yellow, lemonade color, light yellow, you've got the right amount of water," Dr. Rich said.

All liquids count toward proper hydration, even those with caffeine. But, according to Dr. Rich, plain water is best.

"If there is water in the drinks you're drinking, it's going to count to hydrate you -- there just may be a lot of extra stuff, such as salt or glucose -- you don't need it. Whereas water is just water, zero calories and 100 percent hydration," he said.

Water with added minerals and electrolytes aren't necessary, unless you are planning on vigorous exercise.
